Pirate Bar: The Buccaneer!

When people think of cities in Japan, often places like ‘Tokyo’, ‘Kyoto’, ‘Osaka’, and possibly a few others come to mind. For many, ‘Utsunomiya’ isn’t a city that is familiar. Though not as well known as other cities in Japan, Utsunomiya does have some nice offerings. The city is famous for gyoza (fried dumplings), and the Tagawa river running through the middle of the city with cherry blossoms on either side makes for a picturesque scene in the spring. However,  I feel that one thing make this city a must for those who visit the Tochigi area: Pirate Bar

“The Buccaneer” (aka “Pirate Bar”) is a Pirate themed bar in Utsunomiya, and I’ll say this upfront: It absolutely nails the aesthetics! Walking up to the second floor where the bar is located, you can clearly hear the sound of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ theme (from the ride) being played over speakers. The front of the establishment is adorned with decorations that aptly suit the pirate motif, such as skulls, treasure, and empty rum bottles.

Upon opening the door and entering the bar, the atmosphere is no less impressive than the outside. You are greeted by an employee dressed in pirate attire and led to an available table. Just like the outside, the inside is top to bottom pirate inspired. In addition to skulls and treasure, there are hanging ropes, sails, treasure maps, and even a television that plays Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The inside speakers shuffle through a variety of jaunty tunes, often including a violin & accordion combination, or classical guitar. Everything works well together in creating an enjoyable atmosphere without feeling hokey or overplayed.

At the table you are given your menus (sometimes taking the form of a scrolls akin to a ‘treasure maps’), and a hand bell to get the waiter’s attention when you are ready to order. There is a good variety of food to choose from, offering varieties of meat and fried goodies, among other things. I personally recommend the ‘Buccaneer Beef’, which consists of slices of tender beef with a sauce you can pour over them (or dip). Some of the menu items are even served in a tiny treasure chest!

IMG_20170503_183532Being a bar, of course drinks are essential. There are a number of offerings, though rum makes up a good portion of the menu (appropriately so). My preference is ‘Kraken’, as it is smooth and quite pleasant to have straight or on the rocks (though it can be mixed with some things). If you’re looking to step up your pirate rum game, why not have some ‘Mocambo‘, which is served from a gun shaped bottle. Of course you can purchase this rum at other places, but I feel it’s more fun here, given the theme. If hard liquor is not your thing, they also offer a fair selection of beers, mixed drinks, and soft drinks. I think Shandy Gaff (beer mixed with ginger beer) is a good choice.

This bar is just plain fun. From the looks, to the food and drink, even the staff who are exceedingly kind. The last time I went, we were even treated to some magic card tricks! And if it’s your birthday, you are treated to some dessert while David Bisbal’s Ave Maria plays over the speakers (I’m not sure why that song specifically, but it works for having a tropical island sort of feel). Lots of energy here!

There are a few things to keep in mind if you intend to visit. The Bar is closed on Sundays, which isn’t a huge deal, but it’s good to know if you are making plans. The establishment also isn’t very large, and it is becoming more popular, meaning that seating isn’t always guaranteed (come early). Finally, although the place is open until around 3 – 5am (depending on the day), last train usually leaves around 10pm, so unless you are planning to stay in Utsunomiya or have a designated driver, your time here may be cut short. Plan accordingly.

If you’re in Japan, and especially if you’re in the Tochigi area, I can’t recommend this place enough! Grab some friends and set sail for the high seas! You won’t regret it!
